Activity at VAnetworking.com and other 'public' places can help provide a reality view of a virtual assistant.

Deciding to trust someone you've never seen can be a real challenge for VAs and Clients alike. The research is great and valuable, then there comes that moment to leap in and try the relationship. Short term contracts or no fault release clauses can be useful.

This is a very intriguing article and informative. Perhaps anyone not able to trust a VA would not be able to trust a Personal Assistant who works along side them? Such potential clients might not be the right fit for the VA business or the owner's business.

Hi Karri,

Thank you for addressing this issue. It is one that I make sure I explain to the potential client prior to signing on.

If they are not ready to trust someone else with their most personal information, they aren't ready for a VA. They aren't merely trusting their VA with their private information financially, business & personally, they have to also trust the VA will get the job done and in a manner that represents them in a good light.

Trust your instincts and get to know your VA a bit as well. It helps if you know a bit about them beyond the emails you send with assignments. That is a big trust-builder and saves the client from sleepless nights.

I never take that trust for granted. A GOOD VA never will.

Ah Karri, your insightful posts always make me stand back and evaluate the other side of the situation. Clients trust us with credit cards (sometimes) ftp info to the back end of their blogs/websites and their shopping cart... that's a feat in itself... and yet we can't do our tasks to the fullest without this info.

So the next time I log into someone's shopping cart, I'll think more closely about the great trust that individual has invested in me... something not to be taken lightly.

Well said, Karri. I've been guilty of not trusting more, especially when I first started out. I walked away from a project in the early days because of who was collaborating on the project. In reality our respective tasks had nothing to do with each other and we would have never directly interacted together. In hindsight, my lack of trust cost me: a) a project, b) a chance to get to know someone and decide for myself if the rumor mill was accurate, and c) a chance to further develop some working partnerships. Defining lessons with a distinctive impact.
