Lock a pdf file to prevent editing

Recommended Posts

Guest

I have heard people speak of locking a pdf file so that others can't edit it, but I've never had to do it until now. I searched the Adobe Acrobat help files, but don't find anything there (probably looking for the wrong things). Can anyone help? I do have the full version of Adobe.

Nope. But that was just the right place to look! Thanks so much Delilah :)

What level of security did you select to get this accomplished? Newer versions of Acrobat reader permit some editing and commenting. I haven't found them very user friendly, but if someone wanted to change the work, it might be possible.

I don't want to do something that would make typical users who wouldn't be changing things uncomfortable in order to aggravate the few.

Is it possible to lock a PDF without full version Adobe?

I have always converted my Word files to PDF using PDF995 with no problems, but I need to lock some PDFs for a client now and I don't think I can do it that way.

I have access to Adobe Acrobat 6 but when I open these docs in it my fonts and some formatting change and, although I can lock the PDF that way, the document isn't right.

Any help?

Tracey

Wow! thank's Ruth. Have you tried it with documents saved in the Word 2003, etc. compatibility level? About 50 percent of the people in one client office do not have 2007, so we have everyone set up as "compatible".

Thanks, Ruth. I'll give it a shot - I'm sure as long as it's locked she'll be happy. Thanks!
