To Use "I" or "We"?

Recommended Posts

Guest

I've been researching a lot of VA websites. Many sites, including those which are one-person operations, refer to "we". There are other sites that use “I”.

For example, one website may state: We offer specialized marketing whatever.

Another site will state: I offer specialized marketing whatever.

I think “we” sounds a bit more professional; however, “I” is honest. Which is better to use? Any responses would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks!!!

-Tara

Guest Pat Z.

Tara,

I am by no means sure. The one thing I have learned here at VAnetworking is to use the same throughout your website. If you start with "I", make sure that you are always speaking of yourself.

I did a project in the summer where the client, receiving my mailpiece said (she told me ) "Oh, here's a small company" (think cheap worker - she paid me after some teeth pulling but she was cheap). In future I go with "we", and "team". I have the notion, rightly or wrongly, that a client who sees you as a one man band working from home visualizes you as a non-professional, someone trying to make pin money while refereeing a number of small children.

"We" and "team" suggests a professional company. It is not what is, it is what is perceived to be.

I checked my site after reading Pat's post. I say we, but on the blog, I say I.

I think that maybe me needs a promotion to official blogger for the team!

Will anyone listen to her?

I was reading a popular book about becoming a VA, and one of the things it talked about is leaving room to grow in your business. My thought is to use "we" if you ever decide to expand.

Hi Tara,

I started a long time ago with 'we' on my site, because I thought that was the proper thing to do in the business world. The problem was, it always sounded wrong to me because, well, I was just ME!

When I changed my copy to say 'I', I felt so much better, and it was actually easier to write everything I wanted to write, because then I only had to write about me, and what I do.

I think it's a personal choice. I don't think anyone will think you're dishonest for using 'we' if you are a one-woman (or one-man) show.

Hope that helps,

Tracey

Once I had a Dr. who kept referring to himself in third person.

Please do this for Doctor. Doctor needs you to do that.

The first appointment, I'm thinking, where's this Doctor and who the H-- are you? Then I figured it out and because he was absolutely a great doctor, I just went along with it.

WOW!!! I thank you for all the responses! It seems as though it is just a personal choice. ...don't know what I will use yet; but, I most definitely feel better.

I did the same thing, Tracey.

I started out with 'we', but didn't feel right until I changed it to 'I' because it was just me.

I agree, it is a personal choice and whatever you are comfortable with.
