Twitter in plain English

Recommended Posts

Hello, my name is Teri, and I am a Twitterholic! Not only that, but I have no intention of giving up this addiction either! :P

If you happened to be in the conference room last Wednesday night for VAnetworking night, you probably heard me talking about some "trending" and tracking tools you can use to enhance your Twitter experience.

If you use TweetDeck, one of the standard columns is <TwitScoop: Buzzing Right Now> where there is a cloud of keywords showing the most popular topics currently on Twitter. If you click on one of the keywords, it will open a new window and show all the Tweets using that keyword. This new page is static, so you have to keep refreshing to see any new Tweets. In order to get or use a trending topic, you need to use the hash tag <#> or pound symbol before the word, example: #Happy09 started on New Year's Eve and went viral very quickly. That topic is still active and the hope is, it will continue throughout the year. In TweetDeck you can add a search column to watch a trending topic, but when adding your tweets, you have to type in hash tag and keyword.

Then, along came Tweetchat! The topic that is being discussed is flowing with tweets automatically updating. (Try using that <#Happy09> to test/play with Tweetchat.) It is a safe tool, however, you do have to put in your Twitter ID and password, then it asks what room you want to join, type in Happy09. There are a lot of trending topics to choose from and you can even follow several at a time in different browser tabs. When typing a tweet directly in the room's chat box, Tweetchat will automatically add the hashtag and keyword. Another great thing about this tool, is you can pause the chat (look above the chat box) for this menu: <Refresh Speed Pause Play Change Room Sign out> Pausing was my best friend on New Year's Eve when the chat was going by so fast, you couldn't read it! I also followed the Golden Globes and the US Presidential Debates LIVE on Tweetchat, with people from all over the globe. It's like having a virtual, worldwide party!

So, Tawnya's mind was working so hard that I could actually hear the gears moving. :mf_type: She wants to start an open trending topic for VA's worldwide, not depending on VAnetworking membership. After much discussion, we tentatively decided on #VAjot. If you are using Twitter, let's all experiment and start using the hash tag #VAjot when Tweeting about our own VA businesses. My mind is spinning, thinking of how potential clients may follow our #VAjot and have a plethora of VA's and specialties to possibly contact.

I don't want to make this post a novella, so I will end by giving you a website where there are a ton of tools (with descriptions) that you can take advantage of. I will follow this topic and answer any questions you may have. As promised, here is a website with a list of Twitter tools: http://twitter.pbwiki.com/Apps

Well, I left one #VAjot note for you. Not profound, but a test.

The twitter event was enlightening to put it mildly. EVERYONE will be converted eventually. rolfrolf Of course when he joins twitter we will have to find something else to argue about!

Question for Teri ... regarding "If you use TweetDeck, <http://www.tweetdeck.com/beta/> one of the standard columns is <TwitScoop: Buzzing Right Now>"

Do you have to be using the beta version to get the twit scoop group? I use TweetDeck and don't have it.

Well why didn't anyone say that??

All I heard is that you can read about someone dropping their iPhone in the toilet or someone drinking tea or someone thinking that they need to get busy doing work and stop messing around on Twitter.

Now...... I can read about hot chicks dropping their iPhones in the toilet. Awwwesooome! :zz:

P.S. You may think I am making that up, but I have links to all of those scenarios above. Besides who wants to read about what I am doing on an hourly basis. I don't even want to know what I do.

Hey Terry,

I use TweetDeck and TwitScoop is the icon between favorites and 12 second . Has a kinda funky bird on it. If you are already using 10 columns for seacrhes , you will have to trash one so Twitscoop can operate.

Happy Saturday everyone!

Wow Teri, thanks so much for the info. I am signed up with tweetchat and now TweetDeck. I still have a bit to learn about using twitter to the fullest but I am confident that I should grab full hold of it quickly with all of this good advice. I'm sure I will have questions.

Teri :

Thank you so very much for posting this information! I was there at the last seminar and social networking session and wanted this exact information you are sharing here in this post. I didn't get all the information we exchanged with each other that night in order to participate as we discussed. So thank you again for the post. :)

Yes, that sucks about only being able to have 10 columns in Tweekdeck.

I felt it would be cool to have a global area on Twitter where VAs converse to other VAs...hope that makes sense. #VAjot is what we all came up with. A place for Virtual Assistants (VAs) to jot down their thoughts, ideas, etc. about our industry ;)

It will be an extension of conversation we may have in the forum or via one of our seminars, virtual chats, etc. Saying that, any VA is welcome to use it but I'd like to see it used by VAs only. A public chat area for us as business colleagues ;)

#VAjot it next time you are in Twitter ;)
