Ooooo Monday!! Why do you torture me so?

Recommended Posts

 I feel a bit betrayed. Actually A LOT! I've been working as a virtual assistant for a family member in his small business which focuses in Marketing to medical professionals and clinics. So basically I'm a CRM for him, but my specialty has always been Medical Practice Management. I only accepted to work with him because clients for Medical Practice Management has been scarce. So now this family member just started working with a physician and promoted that his company does Medical Practice Management and he has no idea how to do it. So now he's calling me and asks me how to do it himself!?!

I don't want to lose him as a client but I don't feel that what he's doing is right. I really want to professionally tell him off. Any advise on how to handle this?

I apologize if what I've wrote sounds confusing, I'm just too agitated to make it all make sense.

Dana has a good suggestion. You can professionally tell your friend that you have to charge for that information.

  1. It is your income stream
  2. You would charge other physician clients. I feel there is a low-voltage ethics issue to go around doing things on the cuff for very many people when the next guy has to pay for the same activity. It certainly isn't professional.

The professional thing for your relative to do would be refer the physician to you and ask you for a referral fee. Then concentrate on what he does best to continue to build his own business and not have so many of his eggs in this one-doc-basket. If he is offering a service he doesn't do very well, there will be slips and dissatisfaction on the part of the client at some point. The lightest effect would be an unhappy client, all the way to complaints to other clients or potential clients. Meanwhile, the clients he has for his marketing service aren't getting the service they signed on for. Suppose the arrow were pointing the other direction. Would your relative expect you to take on a marketing account if someone were to approach you about it when that is what he does? Or expect you to send them to him?
