We hear VAs always saying network network network as being one of the best ways to make clients. What has been the most valuable networking place, group, site to you?

I am a firm believer in networking absolutely EVERYWHERE you are, from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed. When doing your networking, think outside the box.

You'll find my opinion on it at this previous post:

How I see networking

Hope this helps!

My most valuable networking area ever was in starting this forum. All the VAs who have joined up in the last year have given me more support and outsourcing work than all the other VA groups I have joined over the years put together!

This coming from an impartial eye however since I run the forum cool.gif

But I am sure others think alike too.

The other network that would come in second in my books to this one would be my network of friends and family. It is amazing how they can pass your business through the chain. ie) My son's hockey team has found me plenty of work through that network. You could do the same through your church, daycare, schools, hobbies, social clubs, etc.

I did join the Chamber of Commerce for a year and that could have been a good network for me however, you have to work at that one by attending the many meetings which of course all cost money to attend. I prefer free networking myself.

I agree with Lori about networking everywhere you go. If I have to pick the most effective places (other than family and friends) they would be:

Locally: My Chamber of Commerce and the networking group I started in my area

Virtually: Ryze

Check to see if there are any small business help centres in your area - they'll provide you with excellent resources regarding networking, as all small businesses thrive on this type of promotion. If you can't find any networking groups near you, you can start your own like Terry did (Good stuff, Terry!). You can do this by posting in Yahoo Groups for example (for people to network virtually or to see if you can interest others in meeting at a local restaurant or pub).

And of course mention your work to everyone you meet. I once made an excellent connection by talking to the lady who sat next to me on the city bus!

Good luck!

I have had great success with eWomen Network. I attend my own local chapter and several chapters in surrounding cities. One of my best clients is the Managing Director for my local chapter. Every meeting she mentions me, providing free advertising. I also donated a couple of hours to the chapter silent auction. The high bidder used me to rearrange and reorganize her office, files, calendar, etc. During our meeting I also gave her tips for expanding her marketing effort using my services, i.e., ezine design and distribution, virtual business cards, etc. Within a week she had signed a retainer agreement, and we're having a great time together. I know that she'll be "advertising" my services at our chapter meetings very soon as well.
