My client will be selling her case studies on her store and Amazon. We are wondering if they need an ISBN number assigned to them. They are PDF and perhaps 10 pages in length.

Everything that I am reading says either *yes* or it is your own choice.

Hi Kyle,

If the client plans to sell only on Amazon then ISBN numbers are not required. Amazon will assign each ebook an ASBN number; Amazon's version of an ISBN. If the client intends to sell these ebooks across other sites, i.e. Barnes & Noble, then an ISBN number is required. If the book will be sold in varying formats, i.e. paperback, ebook, hardback, then a unique ISBN number is required for each format version. One number will not fit all formats of the book. The unique number basically indicates which format the book is. It would be like ordering a chair with the stock number 27. If you want it in blue the stock number would be 27BE, in red it would be 27RD.

Thanks, Ruth.

This is what we had decided to go ahead and do - and we need to change the ISBN on her Kindle version because it looks like we put the same one on it as the hard copy, which is strange because I swear we used different numbers. :naughty:

I get asked a lot about ISBN numbers.

If you live in Canada you can get all the ISBN numbers you need free.

The ISBN agency is the federal government. Canada’s ISBN agency is friendly to self-publishers, including those using their own name as the publisher..http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/services/isbn-canada/Pages/create-account-isbn-canada.aspx

Just need to remember that you should assign each format of your book a unique ISBN. For example, if you publish both print and eBook versions, you’ll need to assign one ISBN to the print version and another to the eBook version.

Also, if you are selling on Amazon, Kindle and Createspace will assign their own ISBN numbers if you so choose. This means you do not need to apply for your own ISBN.
