WordPress Forum Moderator - Mark Hunter

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I am very grateful to be given the status of moderator by Tawnya some few months back. I only just realised I should be writing something official up. I will choose to keep a close eye on this forum because WordPress is my specialty.

My name is Mark Hunter and I've worked with WordPress since 2011. The fact I am a web developer / programmer gives me more insight into how the platform works. Although I promise not to get too geeky on you. In fact, I've been told I keep explanations simple and you can see my free WordPress course on building a niche site here.

But my real gig is that of a WordPress Site Developer - training is a side thing. Although if you sign up to become an insider here, at VA Networking, you can see my "Pause" Framework under technical tutorials in the vault. In this training, I discuss how to build a site with various considerations.

I want to be here for all of you and answer any questions you may have, no matter how small you feel they are.

My aim for this forum is to inject some extra engagement and new life into the message board. I am going to suggest we have a competition or challenge with WordPress. I will keep you posted on this and reserve the first reply for updates on it.

So what do you think, gang? Shall we have a bit of fun while we learn and serve? There will be prizes!

Awesome! What type of ecommerce platforms are you familiar with? Do you recommend any one in particular? If so, why?

I look forward to hearing more from you and will be sure to check out your tech training too on the inside.

Hey KD,

I am really into one you may not have heard of. It is ithemes exchange. It is a relatively new kid on the block but what makes it great compared to woocommerce is its simplicity, ability to enable or disable modules you don't need and ithemes also allows you to purchase the pack with all the addons - with developer rights on unlimited sites. Of course, the license lasts a year if you want updates.

Thanks for reaching out and checking out my tech training. If you have any questions, please do ask. It also helps me understand :)

Do you have a favourite ecommerce plugin or platform?

Hey Danielle!

I got really inspired today by VA Insider Reiko. She suggested I do a challenge/competition and I remembered mentioning I would. The issue is thinking up something that we can all do that is WordPress related.

I realise that many VAs starting out bootstrap and sometimes don't want to invest in hosting at the start. A colleague of mine found a solution. A free host that allows you to have WordPress which I didn't even believe would exist.

So there would be no excuse not to try it out just to practice WordPress at the very least for clients ;)

So with this playground available to us for free, we could set some challenges to build something and share the discovery or even use the site as our own once finished.

Who would be interested then in doing something engaging, contributing to the community and learning as we do it? Or would that be a distraction?

I'll post more tomorrow.

Hi Mark,

I'm fairly new to the forums. (3-weeks maybe?)

I like the idea of doing something in WordPress as a competition.

I just learned a non-WordPress 'thing" and got so giddy. It is for Genesis theme and child theme ModernbloggerPro. It doesn't have a landing page php so I made it (with the help of techy bloggers) and BAM, I now have a landing page.

Plus the really cool thing is the client I now have has the same theme and as part of something I did for I suggested this and made one for her too. Cool! I love learning new things.

Hi @sd_2000 thanks for the encouragement :) I am thrilled you were able to follow the advice and get a landing page up. Did you use a "page template" file for this. It is always exciting to learn. In fact, Genesis is my specialisation now. Anything you'd like to know in particular?

In honesty, I've been busy polishing off projects so haven't put so much time or thought into the competition yet. Hopefully get something up mid month :D

@subcontracting - thanks! Pick my brain anytime. We can probably learn a lot from each other. Hope your podcast is going well!
