New VA in Tennessee

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

My name is Jordan and I'm new to the virtual assistant world. I am currently a college student on medical leave from my usual job and I had considered becoming VA in the past. Now seems like the perfect time to try it out!

I am still deciding what speciality would be best for me. Currently, I'm offering services as and "all-around" VA and personal assistant!

I would love any words of advice you all could provide!

Thanks!

Welcome Jordan!

Thank you for introducing yourself. You have come to a wonderful place to learn all things VA. Do take advantage
of the terrific free training options on this site.

Offering services as 'all around' can be limiting. Do think about offering services to a specific target market. Once
you do that, you become a specialist for that audience and marketing toward a specified audience actually
becomes easier as opposed to trying to be all things to all people.

Take the time to evaluate who you would like to work with and then focus all your marketing and your internet
presence on that audience.

That would be my first piece of advice I would offer to you.

Please feel free to post back with additional questions and comments.

Janine

Hi Jordan, welcome to Forum! I think beginning by offering general admin services is a great way to get started however as Janine mentioned it would be beneficial to determine who your target market is going to be. Once you have chosen your target market you can then focus on marketing specifically to them.

Here’s some additional advice:

  1. Know your why – this is the reason you started your VA business, you’ll need to refer to this on the days you feel discouraged
  2. Schedule your time – you’ll be more productive, use a planner or the calendar on your phone
  3. Use online tools and resources – including the numerous resources found in this forum, this will save you time and increase your knowledge base as a new VA

Welcome Jordon! I offered generalized services for a few years when I first started for a few reasons. I was a Jackie of All Trades and didn't know what I wanted to focus on with my skills. By working for a few years I really learned things I detested doing (like transcription LOL) to things I loved doing graphic design which led me to web development which eventually led me to my niche of internet marketing ;) I first had to find out what I loved doing the most and then build my niche around that. The only way for me to find that out was just to do it at the time. What you could do to get ahead of this game a bit is write out a list of services you'd like to offer. Also write out an avatar of the person you'd like to market to (their geographical location, age, how much money they make, do they read books, yada yada) write down everything you can think about this avatar. This avatar will represent the people in your target market you will most likely want to promote to.

Thank you all so much for the advice!

I am currently hoping to find my niche, as I would like to offer a speciality, but I have no idea what I want to offer yet! Where/how would you all advise that I look for clients? I learned about being a virtual assistant on UpWork, but I've not had much luck there.

I'm very excited and greatly appreciate everyone's advice! :)
