Hi my name is Shauwana and I'm from Trinidad and Tobago. I've been a part time VA for a little over 2 years on Freelancer.com but I have been a full time Office Assistant/Clerk for over 5 year in the Finance and Banking industry. I have also been a Data Entry Clerk for 10 years in the IT and Financial/Banking industry. I have no kids but my older sister's 5 kids make me feel like they are more mine than hers, and I love them dearly. I'm not married and recently lost both parents and the family dog. In my spare time I love to read and write stories and poems and repair broken technology. I'm open minded, excited about life and thankful to God for every day that I awake, because I get another opportunity to make a difference, no matter how small.

As I was contemplating my next career move, it was declared that my country was in a recession and because me, along with a few of my other coworkers, were 'new' contract workers (less than 10 years contract work for the company), we were let go. I'm currently looking to build a steady, solid clientele willing to pay what I'm worth, and that is becoming a challenge because I am not in the US and there are VAs from the Philippines and India offering their services for $5 or less an hour. I was thinking about going into business with my other former coworker and having a full service business, but finding the RIGHT clients are hard and being a VA working in Trinidad is practically non-existent.

I have a simple website about me and my services for now: bestvirtualassistanthire.weebly.com.

Any help or suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Shauwana, welcome to VAnetworking! I'm so sorry to hear about the recent passing of your parents and family dog. That must have been hard to handle.

Your website is coming along nicely, are you staying active on social media?

I would really appreciate some advice. If someone is transitioning from full time education to becoming a VA and has limited money, which would you recommend:

1) Upgrade to a VAinsider, try to hopefully find clients from the job board, or network and make friends so that maybe fellow VAs can refer clients to you, if they are fully booked. Then use from the income to purchase the VAC program later or

2) Make the extra sacrifice and purchase the full VAC and 1 yr VAinsider program and everything else, including finding clients and networking with fellow VAs, will fall into place?

Thank you in advance.

Shauwana, you could book a free call with Tawnya to discuss your options and learn more about the two programs.

Here's the link to book one with her: http://www.meetme.so/tawnya

Hello Shauwana,

Welcome to the forum! I am so sorry for your loss and I know at times this might be tough, but please continue to pull through. I am from the Caribbean as well. I am based in Jamaica, this forum was like the starter for me in terms of unlimited resources and support. Once I read and learnt more then I decided what I wanted to do for my business. I know this might not help much but you will know what will work for you or not. I was pointed in the right direction the other day by this article that Tawnya wrote in order to find new clients http://bit.ly/21n3ARG. I wish you all the best.

Hi Shauwana and welcome to #VAforum!

I wouldn't even try to compete with 3rd world country pricing as the types of clients that pay only $5/hr are not worth having anyhow. Being virtual your clients don't have to know where you live really which means you can charge whatever you want. You'll need to get out of that mindset though of where you live if that makes sense. VAs in North America have no probs selling their services for $25-$50/hr so why shouldn't you be able to sell at that amount too? ;) My point being is that being a Virtual Assistant is especially an awesome opportunity for those in third world countries because there is no reason you can't charge the same as North American VAs if you are offering the same services right? ;) Think out of the box in where you live and who you market to. Quit trying to compete for the $5/hr clients and start competing for the $25+/hr clients, make sense?

On a personal note, sorry to hear about your parents and your doggie. I'm not looking forward to my parents passing on but know it is inevitable and will get to see them one day again in heaven too. Saying that will miss conversing with them here on earth but our time on earth is just a blink compared to eternity in heaven.

Any help you need, just ask us in the appropriate forums and we will do what we can to give you some guidance.

Shauwana, my skype is working now so if you want to rebook an appointment time we can discuss the VAC and VAinsiders now. http://www.meetme.so/booktawnya

The VAinsiders.com membership has a good job board of potential clients that are not looking to pay just $5/hr too ;)

Nice to hear about you Shauwana, I am from Barbados and recently started my business as a virtual assistant, I have been circulating my brochure on social media and have gotten some very good responses and received from my first contract.  Maybe we can start an association in the caribbean for virtual assistants, to educate companies about our services.

I will you all the best in your endeavours.
