Prospective Clients Who Seem to Be Employers

Recommended Posts

Hi, this is Anita Dixon. I received an offer from a prospective client on Upwork. All of the conversation was done via instant messenger, like a job interview.

I need some insight. The pay is good, but these things make me suspicious. Mainly, because they chose to have a discussion via IM

1) They offered to send me a laptop with their company's information already loaded; including a timekeeping system

2) They want me to fill out and return HR paperwork, even after I expressed that I am a business owner/partner, not an employee

3) They offered to pay for various business supplies that I will need in order to support them

4) They sent me a cashier's check overnight for close to $3,000 (not a company check) and said my hiring manger will tell me how the funds will be spent.

5) I asked for us to do a contract with all details of the duties they want me to perform. None yet, supposed to converse today

6) They asked me to fill out a form and send back to HR. I expressed again, that I am a business owner/partner. Not an employee

Any advice on how to handle. They are willing to pay me what I've asked hourly, but I am very suspicious. I won't do any work without a contract outlining their both of our expectations.

I think it has something to do with getting you to cash the check and it then gets sent back to them with your checking account information on it. With HR paperwork they would have all the necessary data to steal your identity. I say this because I have had my id stolen a couple of times. (Not from cashing checks...all legit stuff like refinancing my house :))

Be careful!
