I have worked for a few clients now and I am now looking for new clients aside from the one I have now. I have a letter drafted up asking for referrals. Should I email this letter to my former clients or snail mail it to them?

Hi Jason, great strategy- to ask for a referral. My personal opinion would be to phone or email your letter. (especially if you are Canadian and facing a postal strike :naughty:)

I always got better results from referral letters when I phoned and talked in person.

Yes picking up the phone is always the best. Saying that nice to receive something in snail mail too. I find I open mail more than email nowadays with all the spam coming into my inbox. In fact I look forward to getting snail mail nowadays LOL! Saying that looks like the postal system is going on strike UGH!


You could also reach out to people on their social networks. I find most people respond back to a personal message on Facebook/Twitter if I send one to them, that might be another way to connect.

I would call them and then follow up with a "thanks for speaking to me and I appreciate your help' reminder letter". I usually also send a small thank-you for qualified referrals (In other words, ones that hire me and keep me for at least a month.) For instance, I will send a few ''sticky notes pads (2"x 2" size) that have my logo printed on them with a thank you note. This is a small reminder to them that I value their referrals.
