  1. Hello and Welcome! This website is great when it comes to information and support when you are just starting. I hope your journey as VA is successful and fulfilling.
  2. So today is the day that I send my first project proposal to a client. Can you say nervous?! I feel so accomplished that someone is interested and overwhelmed by the prospective that the time is finally here that my business might actually be starting.
  3. My business is not up and running yet but it so great to hear from all the experience VAs out there that the struggle to get started will be worth my time and effort. My biggest motivation for going into business was the flexibility it offered along with the satisfaction.
  4. I posted a similar question under the specialties board but I wanted to make sure my question hit the right audience. I am developing my business and working on defining the services I want to provide to my target market, which is small childcare facilities and home run businesses. Here is my service plan thus far: Licensing Assistance (for local businesses): Developing an action plan to apply for state and county licensing, and developing a quality assurance to program to continually meet licensing requirements. Administrative Assistance: Gathering registration, physical exams, and contact information forms for children in the facility as well as staff, updating these forms, and organizing and managing this information (included contracts, confidentiality, and photo permission forms) Basic Bookkeeping and Invoicing: Setting up payment system, invoicing clients for childcare services Childcare Services Enhancement: Creating and utilizing forms such as Daily Sheets, Developing and implementing educational curriculum, menu planning, and parent newsletters. So what do you think? Are they defined enough or need to specification? Are they too broad or narrow? Am I trying to do too much just starting out or do I offer a good variety of services? Your professional criticisms are much welcomed.
  5. So I finally figured out my target market; small childcare facilities and home run businesses. I am developing my business right now so I am looking for any suggestions or insight. Thus far I have decided to focus my services this way. Licensing Assistance (for local businesses): Developing an action plan to apply for state and county licensing, and developing a quality assurance to program to continually meet licensing requirements. Are these services well defined or do they need more? Are they too broad or too narrow? Is it too much to start with or just right? Any professional criticisms are welcome.
  6. Semper Fi to RonnieBryan (my husband is a marine) We all feel like we need to be Super Woman at times, with family, friends, and business pulling us every direction. Its difficult to even remember who we are at times but it's important to take a step back and try to focus on that topic exactly; our self. We cannot be the person that we need to be or the person that we want to be unless we decide to take a moment and focus on ourselves. Self reflection and evaluation are items of business, just the same as doing to books and marketing. Just know that while I am new to this website, I can see the amazing impact that you are making on people's lives. That is something you should be proud of! You deserve to take a moment for you.
  7. I am clueless when it comes to bookkeeping and would love some guidance. Have you found a guide that works for you? Did you take an on-line class? Do you just sub contract it out to another VA? Are you WonderWoman and just figured it out? (If so how do I acquire these mystical powers? Joking ) Thank you in advance for your help and support!
  8. I am in the process of starting my business. My business plan is 3/5ths of the way done, I am working on my website, developing forms and procedures, researching more information I need, haven't started on my financials, etc. Plus I am doing contract work on oDesk for some money and my part time job to help with bills and then there is still my life outside of work, my family and house. How do you or how have you prioritized it all? Is setting up a schedule where you plan to work one hour on your website, and then one hour on finances, and then an hour on business development helpful? Should I sit down and make a list of all the directions I need to be headed and then schedule them into my planner? The wisdom of those who have walked this path before would be much appreciated. It can be so overwhelming at times, just hearing from ya'll would be awesome.
  9. Thank you so much for posting this, It finally led me to decide on my target market, small childcare businesses such as home based daycare and small childcare facilities.
  10. I am this under starting up because I hope it inspires other VAs who are developing their business. I have finally decided after much deliberation on my target market (and the cheers erupt and fireworks go off!****); small childcare establishments including home based childcare and small childcare facilities based on my experience in these fields. It took a lot of brainstorming and self reflection because I felt pulled in so many directions with all the different possibilities. Those of us who are just beginning know how much a struggle this part of the decision making process is and I hope you can share in this joy. I don't know that I can offer you step by step advice on developing your target market, but I can tell you that when you finally decide, its a weight off your shoulders and for me the ideas just keep flowing in regarding services I can provide and how to market them. Just keep searching and you will figure it out (and just maybe it will find you).
  11. Wow, this post is so inspirational! I have years of experience in the childcare industry and this just might be a lead for me to follow with my new business. To answer the questions about licensing and workers; yes in order to do work at the facility, you will have to meet all the licensing requirements including background checks, OSHA training and up to date TB tests. Some states even require that all employees be first aid and cpr certified and/or food safety certified. Needless to say, the investment to meet all these requirement is not worth working onsite unless you already have them.
  12. I love the open house idea too. Even though I am just starting my business, I am trying to develop a working plan on retaining clients and that really fits the bill.
  13. Thanks for the link! I also am a new VA and soaking it all up like a sponge. I have looked at lots of different business start up list, all of which had some of the same order of business and some unique, so I decided to start my own running list. As I find new items, I add it to my list.
  14. I honestly planned on starting up with Wordpress but when I downloaded it, I hated it. But I am a do it yourselfer that has to customize every button and toolbar. I know other people that have used Weebly and liked it. I think Vistaprint has a business website builder too.
  15. I am in the process of designing my website so looking at another VA's is really inspiration. I agree with Leanne that you need to make sure the font type is consistent throughout the website to give it a clean feel. The other thing that I would suggest is looking at your title formats. Some of them had each letter capitalized and other did not. Specifically, under the what are the benefits category, I would capitalize the first letter of each sentence bullet for a bit more formal look. I loved that you also included that aca client guide. I was considering using that too.
