I'm so sorry Yvonne. It's disgraceful that you have to go through this problem along with everything else that is going on. Some companies have no heart!
I would certainly contact BA afterwards and tell them about the poor customer service you received and keep fighting until something is done, maybe you will receive something towards a flight home the next time. I have done this before, I came back from home a few years ago and my case had been opened and some of my belongings were torn and broken and I contacted BA and kept fighting until I eventually received money from them.
It takes a while but you get an overwhelming sense of satisfaction when you win!!
